A film on Solomon "Sol" Tshekisho Plaatje - Open Window University for the Creative Arts

Sol Plaatje writer, statesman, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur and great orator had a vision of a fair equal and just South Africa, which encompassed every language group. His accomplishments are well documented in numerous publications, his own and others. In this film people who know his life story and his work explain the values he lived by and how he acquired them.

Prof Sekepe Daniel Matjila is involved in research organizations and associations nationally and internationally. He has presented scientific papers and published articles on language, culture and literature in various journals.
In 2014 Lover of his People compiled, translated and edited by Prof Matjila and Prof Karen Haire (of Principia University in Illinois) won the English Academy of Southern Africa Sol Plaatje Prize for Translation. In April 2016 Prof Matjila received a research award from SMAPE in Gaborone, Botswana for his contribution in the development of research in the field of Cultural History, Language and Literature of Botswana.
DS Matjila is a Professor in the Department of African Languages and Head of Centre for Pan African Languages and Cultural Development at the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Mr Sabata-mpho Mokae is an academic, novelist and translator. He is the author of a biography The Story of Sol T Plaatje (2010) and novels Ga ke Modisa (2012), Dikeledi (2014) and Moletlo wa Manong (2018).

In 2014 he was a writer-in-residence at the University of Iowa in the USA where he is now Honorary Fellow in Writing. He has translated two children’s books by Gcina Mhlophe, Dinaane tsa Aforika (Tales of Africa) and Semaka sa Dinaane (Our Story Magic), from English to Setswana.In 2020 he co-edited, with British colleague Professor Brian Willan, two academic books; ‘Sol Plaatje’s Mhudi: History, Criticism, Celebration’ as well as ‘Sol T. Plaatje: A life in letters’ .
Mokae teaches Creative Writing at the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley.
